What can you put in a skip? Our guide to planning your load

Before you hire a skip, it is worth looking through the waste you actually have. A typical clear-out can include ordinary items alongside paint tins, electrical equipment or other materials that need different handling. Sorting those out early makes it easier to choose the right service and avoid problems when your skip is collected.

We provide skip hire from our Denbigh base for customers across Denbighshire and surrounding areas, including Flintshire and Conwy. This guide explains the main questions to work through before you request a skip. If you are unsure about a particular item, ask us to confirm it before putting it in the skip.

Start with the type of waste

For a general household or renovation clear-out, make a list of the materials you will be removing. Common examples might include furniture, timber, packaging or other non-hazardous waste, but do not assume every item is accepted in every skip. Tell us what is in your load, particularly if it contains heavy materials or unusual items.

Soil and rubble need extra attention. If you book a skip for rubble or soil, please put only rubble or soil in it. Adding mixed waste can result in an additional charge before we collect the skip. If your project will produce both heavy material and general waste, speak to us about the best way to arrange it.

What can you put in a skip? Items you cannot put in our skips

Our current skip hire guidance lists the following restricted items:

  • Asbestos, chemicals and other hazardous waste
  • Needles and medical waste
  • Paints and oils
  • Gas bottles
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Televisions, monitors and fluorescent tubes
  • Tyres
  • Food and animal waste

This is not a complete description of every possible item. If your waste includes anything similar or you cannot identify a material, keep it out of the skip until we have advised you. Never conceal restricted items beneath other waste.

What about plasterboard? Ask us before loading it. We may be able to accept small quantities if they are bagged or sealed and placed on top of the skip, rather than mixed in loose. Please confirm this with us when booking, including whether any additional charge applies.

For example, a garage clear-out may involve old paint and oil as well as shelving. A kitchen renovation may leave appliances alongside cupboards. Make a separate pile for anything you need to check, so it does not accidentally end up in the skip while you are working.

How full can you load a skip?

Keep the waste level with the sides of the skip. Nothing should stick out above the top. We cannot safely collect an overfilled skip, and an additional charge may apply. Break down suitable bulky items where practical and safe to do so, and place smaller items in the gaps, but do not press materials above the fill line.

If the load is growing faster than expected, ask us about the right skip size before it becomes overfilled. Our [4, 6 and 8 yard skip size guide](/blog/what-size-skip-do-i-need/) can help you think through the volume at the start of the job.

Three checks before requesting a skip

  1. List your materials. Include the less obvious items, such as paints, appliances, soil and plasterboard.
  2. Separate anything restricted or uncertain. Ask us what service or disposal route is appropriate before loading it.
  3. Estimate the volume and weight. A pile of light household waste and a pile of rubble of the same size may need different arrangements.

If you have a mixture of bulky household items and would rather have a team remove them, our house and garden clearance service may be worth considering. Tell us about restricted items there too; a clearance booking does not mean we can take every type of waste.
